The Mid-Week Music Video Reviews Round-Up – 10/21/15

How’s everyone doing this fine autumnal evening? If you’re looking to stimulate two of the five major senses, then feast your eyes and ears on the latest music videos from these Asian-American artists. Love or hate any of em? Let us know and drop a comment, we’d love to hear what you guys have to say!

Run River North – “Superstition”
RRN looks to finally be preparing to drop a new album, and I couldn’t be more excited. This song is a B-side, so it may or may not make the album, but regardless it’s strong enough on it’s own to stand as a single – so this is a (hopefully) promising sign of things to come. The video suffers from inconsistent focus issues that can be a bit maddening at times, but I won’t hold it against them too much as this isn’t an official release.

Lyrics Born – “Real People”
I’ll always appreciate how eclectic of an artist Lyrics Born, and this track is a great example of that. The video is one of those numbers that asks for fan/crowd submissions that are incorporated as a montage throughout the clip – so that means there’s a huge spectrum of quality to account for. Sometimes things are crystal clear, sometimes they were clearly shot on a potato. But it was dope to see the support of the friends, family, fans, and community throughout. Folks like his wife Joyo, Sung Kang, Russell Peters, etc all showed some love.

Honey Cocaine – “Honeydick”
It’s been a little while since we saw a new visual from Honey… and I’m still not really a fan. The video is mildly interesting in that new-age-abstract-street-culture type of way, but doesn’t make a lasting impression. The song… I like the confidence she spits with on the verses but the hook is mediocre.

Mike B – “All Be So Simple”
MB’s penchant for jazzy beats always makes his material an easy listen. Makes me feen for some old school Nujabes, and that’s a good thing. This live/studio session MV ain’t perfect on a technical level, but it captures the vibe well enough. But this song translates so well when backed by a band that it pretty much makes up for everything else.

Andrew Huang – “$”
Why the artist formerly known as Songs to Wear Pants To isn’t bigger is beyond me. Many musicians are a jack of trades master of none, but nearly everything Huang does, he does well – and he does a lot. Sure the song is a little bit soapbox-esque, but isn’t that partially the point of underground rap? And I guess this is just another genre Andrew can check off his long list of capabilities.

Jihae – “Only You”
Jihae certainly skews towards the use of surrealism in her videos, making the viewing experience all the more subjective. That being said, her foray into alt-rock seems to become more polished and complete with each song I hear. As for the video, I don’t know if I could say I enjoyed it, but I was intrigued, puzzled, and oddly interested – and maybe that’s all is required of me.

Kinjaz Dancing to “Dream Within a Dream” by the Glitch Mob
Too nice. That’s all I have to say.
